Cravings During Pregnancy

By Mac Neil at 2010-05-13 01:24:16
Pregnant woman tend to develop a liking for pickles, ice cream, red peppers and even peanut butter. Cravings are experienced by almost three quarters of all pregnant women. Sweets, salty food and dairy products are the most common but some women may even develop strange cravings. It has been seen that a few pregnant women like having black olives with cheesecake or fruits dipped in salsa. Cravings can be peculiar but despite the fact that pregnancy and nutrition are closely connected, most of the time these cravings are very safe.

Some believe that pregnant women are just more likely to comfort themselves and take advantage of this precious opportunity to get what they want. They are tired, heavy, hormonal and that hot fudge brownie every night seems to take the edge off. But, many women report being repeatedly inconvenienced by their cravings and they are definitely not trying to get any extra attention or comfort themselves by having to drive to buy a candy bar in the middle of the night when they would much rather be sleeping.

Satisfy your cravings with nutritious snacks. Have a variety of healthy things to snack on readily available so you avoid overindulging in foods that are too decadent. If you are craving something sweet, consider having some mini chocolates near by or opt for a cup of hot chocolate. Both are far better for you than an entire candy bar or piece of cake.

Gaining weight during pregnancy is something that every healthy woman does. There are several factors that add up to the total weight of a pregnancy; increased eating is only one very small part, and doesn't always have to be. Your body is holding on to and is also filling with a lot of fluids to keep your own and baby's bodies healthy. Your baby's body is also part of your weight gains. Therefore, if you are gaining up to 25-30 pounds by the end of your pregnancy, you are in the normal range.

Cravings are one of the most difficult things to deal with during pregnancy and can be a major cause of excessive weight gain. Finding a way to deal with them can be crucial to controlling weight gain during pregnancy. It is possible to find certain foods that can actually reduce cravings, and the puffy face and varicose veins that are common during pregnancy.

Pregnancy weight gain shouldn't be an unpleasant experience for anyone. There are mothers out there who prefer not to eat as much when they are pregnant in fear that they will become fat or undesirable. This type of behavior can often result in a premature baby or sick, pregnant mother who has to be hospitalized due to malnutrition.

Drinking alcoholic beverage during pregnancy is dangerous especially to the fetus. The intoxicating effects of alcohol can affect the fetus which may cause fetal depression. Alcohol tolerance varies from person to person. Even the smallest amount may have severe effect to a developing fetus. So best thing to do is to avoid any alcoholic beverage while pregnant.

Another major change the woman's body is undergoing is the size of the uterus. The uterus grows very large in this first stage of pregnancy to accommodate the growth of the fetus. Because the uterus is growing so rapidly in this first stage, frequent bathroom stops are a common result. Back pain is also a constant problem throughout pregnancy because the fetus often rests against the spine causing pressure.
